50MHz Trophy 2007

The build up to this event was characterised by many changes of plan as regards location and personnel. In the end I finished up doing the event single operator from my "local" Welsh hill top in IO81.

To be competitive in this event as a single operator is a massive undertaking of physical endurance. Ignoring all the preparatory work of making sure the kit works and packing the Land Rover, I left home at 9am on Saturday morning and got home at finally returing at 7:30pm on the Sunday. It takes five hours to erect the two masts and assemble the station, and then three hours to disassemble it all and pack the Land Rover. Oh, and there is a 24 hour radio event in the middle!

I was exceptionally lucky with the weather and watched many showers head up the valley nearby - including a rather nasty looking thunderstorm. One heavy shower while building the staion inside the Land Rover was as bad as it got.

Finally - it's all over.....
Room for much more kit next year

Conditions were good with sporadic E on the Saturday evening into Spain and YU/U/9A etc on Saturday evening and patchy shorter skip on Sunday. In all 473 contacts were made into 139 squares and 34 countries. The map below shows all the contacts except the CT3, EA8 and 5T5 !!
